Notes

Michael asked about work-study students handling reference questions and when they should be told to forward questions to the librarian.  His concern is that sometimes the workstudy student may not find the book or the right database to help the student.

Cheyenne asked about ILL in the library.  Ed said that ILL is time-consuming and could be expensive, but if we want to present a proposal to him, he will make a decision about going that direction.  He feels that ithe process takes a long time, and we can order books for these requests in most cases.  Ellen asked what resource we have for students who want to request document delivery of an article that cannot be found in full text in our various databases.  Cheyenne said that one option is to have the student go to UW Bothell-Cascadia library and get a temporary pass for a day and then they can search for some articles in their databases.

Cheyenne said that she would like to weed some of the older, poor-condition books from the fiction section.  Ed said ok.

Cheyenne asked if there should be a "story hour" for the kids in the campus daycare.

Ed's upcoming schedule:

7/22 and 7/23 - he is attending the LMDC meeting.  He will need coverage until 6:30 on both nights.  Annie said that she will be able to cover and come in later.

8/4 and 8/5  - Ed will be attending a conference and will need the same coverage.  Annie said she would be able to cover and come in later.

Cheyenne will be gone from 7/18 to 7/24.

Ed thanked everyone for their work on creating Podcasts.  He said that for the audio, we will need a boom microphone as the camera mike picks up room noise.

Ed said that a hypercardioid mike can attach to the camera.  Cheyenne said she will send a note to the faculty about subscribing to the Learning Commons podcasts.

Ed said that he will create a separate website for uploading podcasts.

Ed mentioned the Library Faculty Endowment Fund and asked Cheyenne to follow up on the procedure / guidelines for requesting and using funds.

Michael asked about extension cord and power strip purchases.  The Granger book in purchasing has a selection according to Annie.

Cheyenne mentioned a new student that is needing continuous computer help from all of the staff in the library and lab and who seems to be getting more upset with her inability to handle working with the computer and Angel.  Ed emphasized that staff is not to spend hours of time helping one student.  Students that need that much help should be directed to student services advisors / tutoring.

Michael said that new databases are available on the Learning Commons web site:  Science Direct is up now, as is EBSCO Academic Search Premier and JSTOR.

Michael mentioned the recent incident where a teacher requested five laptops to use in his classroom as he said there were not enough.  The teacher did not keep track of the laptops that were checked out to him and one was stolen by a student that day.  Then the teacher asked for more laptops a second day.  Michael told him that this could not be done anymore for him and it was not up to the library to provide classroom equipment.  The teacher tried to go around and request from Annie in Media Services. Then also one of his students attempted to checkout a laptop for the classroom.  Ed said he would discuss this teacher's conduct with the appropriate Dean.

Sukirti mentioned that there were requests by faculty and staff to use the TLC equipment.  ED said that he will come up with guidelines on the policy for webcams, microphones, etc.
